This book builds a much-needed bridge between biostatistics and organismal biology by linking the arithmetic of statistical studies of organismal form to the biological inferences that may follow from it. It incorporates a cascade of new explanations of regression, correlation, covariance analysis, and principal components analysis, before applying these techniques to an increasingly common data resource: the description of organismal forms by sets of landmark point configurations. For each data set, multiple analyses are interpreted and compared for insight into the relation between the arithmetic of the measurements and the rhetoric of the subsequent biological explanations. The text includes examples that range broadly over growth, evolution, and disease. For graduate students and researchers alike, this book offers a unique consideration of the scientific context surrounding the analysis of form in today's biosciences.

Geometric Morphometrics for Biologists is an introductory textbook for a course on geometric morphometrics, written for graduate students and upper division undergraduates, covering both theory of shape analysis and methods of multivariate analysis. It is designed for students with minimal math background; taking them from the process of data collection through basic and more advanced statistical analyses. Many examples are given, beginning with simple although realistic case-studies, through examples of complex analyses requiring several different kinds of methods. The book also includes URL’s for free software and step-by-step instructions for using the software. * Accessible, student-tested introduction to sophisticated methods of biological shape analysis * Detailed instructions for conducting analyses with freely available, easy to use software * Numerous illustrations; including graphical presentations of important theoretical concepts and demonstrations of alternative approaches to presenting results * Many realistic examples, both simple and complex, from on-going research * Comprehensive glossary of technical terms

Modern computer-intensive statistical methods play a key role in solving many problems across a wide range of scientific disciplines. This new edition of the bestselling Randomization, Bootstrap and Monte Carlo Methods in Biology illustrates the value of a number of these methods with an emphasis on biological applications. This textbook focuses on three related areas in computational statistics: randomization, bootstrapping, and Monte Carlo methods of inference. The author emphasizes the sampling approach within randomization testing and confidence intervals. Similar to randomization, the book shows how bootstrapping, or resampling, can be used for confidence intervals and tests of significance. It also explores how to use Monte Carlo methods to test hypotheses and construct confidence intervals. New to the Third Edition Updated information on regression and time series analysis, multivariate methods, survival and growth data as well as software for computational statistics References that reflect recent developments in methodology and computing techniques Additional references on new applications of computer-intensive methods in biology Providing comprehensive coverage of computer-intensive applications while also offering data sets online, Randomization, Bootstrap and Monte Carlo Methods in Biology, Third Edition supplies a solid foundation for the ever-expanding field of statistics and quantitative analysis in biology.

For the first time a book is available which is devoted to the analysis of multidimensional variability in fossils and deals with the application of multivariate statistical methods to problems of palaeobiology. Presents important new statistical methods for analysing particular problems occurring in biology. Questions of ecology, systematics, quantitative genetics, biostratigraphy and evolutionary biology amenable to quantitative analysis are fully considered. This multivariate primer introduces new but little known methods in a practical format. Methods for applying quantitative genetics to evolution in the phenotype appear with examples and caveats, together with exercises and problems to expand and exemplify difficult concepts. A computer programs supplement written in SAS IML is included which will enable readers to reproduce most of the tables in the text and continue to use them for actual further analysis or research purposes with a minimum of alteration. A 5.25" or 3.50" disk is available separately if required. On a more personal note, Professor Reyment has recently been awarded the Bjorken Prize for work in biometry.

Research Methods in Human Skeletal Biology serves as the one location readers can go to not only learn how to conduct research in general, but how research is specifically conducted within human skeletal biology. It outlines the current types of research being conducted within each sub-specialty of skeletal biology, and gives the reader the tools to set up a research project in skeletal biology. It also suggests several ideas for potential projects. Each chapter has an inclusive bibliography, which can serve as a good jumpstart for project references. Provides a step-by-step guide to conducting research in human skeletal biology Covers diverse topics (sexing, aging, stature and ancestry estimation) and new technologies (histology, medical imaging, and geometric morphometrics) Excellent accompaniment to existing forensic anthropology or osteology works
