Highway 20 was designated a federal highway in 1926, and until the arrival of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s it was a primary route across northern Wyoming. From the Great Plains in the east to the mountains in the west, Highway 20 passed though cities and towns that retain their frontier visages and such wonders as Hell's Half Acre, the Wind River Canyon, Natural Hot Springs, Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, and spectacular Yellowstone National Park. Fortunately, historic Highway 20 remains almost completely intact and can be driven much as travelers did in years past. Postcard History Series: Along Wyoming's Historic Highway 20 celebrates this trip, illustrated by more than 200 vintage postcards showing the personality of the road. Not to be forgotten are the tourist courts, hotels, diners, and gas stations that made automobile travel possible.

First published in the famous American Guide Series of the Work Projects Administration in 1941, Wyoming: A Guide remains a distinguished survey of the state, its centers of interest, and its history. Now issued in paperback for the first time, it can introduce to new readers the geographic spectacle and pioneer history that continue to shape the character of Wyoming. A new introduction by T. A. Larson, author of History of Wyoming, updates the Guide and evaluates changes seen in the state since the book was first published. Valuable to the resident as a reference to the state's many treasures, and useful to the tourist who wants to know more than the road signs tell, Wyoming: A Guide commemorates those who passed through to the West and those who stayed to forge a state in the heart of the frontier.

Few roads can match Route 20's beauty, history, or contribution to New York's vitality. In 1926, Route 20 became a federal highway and evolved into New York's foremost east-west road. But unlike most early highways, it has survived almost completely intact. The story of Route 20 is told through more than 200 vintage postcards showing scenes from the Shaker communities in Columbia County to the Lake Erie Shore. The postcards show the personality of the road: main streets, the Finger Lakes, and scenic vistas. Not to be forgotten are the tourist courts, hotels, diners, and gas stations that made travel possible.

A vivid account of the prehistory and history of Denver as revealed in its archaeological record, Denver: An Archaeological History invites us to imagine Denver as it once was. Around 12,000 B.C., groups of leather-clad Paleoindians passed through the juncture of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, following the herds of mammoth or buffalo they hunted. In the Archaic period, people rested under the shade of trees along the riverbanks, with baskets full of plums as they waited for rabbits to be caught in their nearby snares. In the early Ceramic period, a group of mourners adorned with yellow pigment on their faces and beads of eagle bone followed Cherry Creek to the South Platte to attend a funeral at a neighboring village. And in 1858, the area was populated by the crude cottonwood log shacks with dirt floors and glassless windows, the homes of Denver's first inhabitants. For at least 10,000 years, Greater Denver has been a collection of diverse lifeways and survival strategies, a crossroads of interaction, and a locus of cultural coexistence. Setting the scene with detailed descriptions of the natural environment, summaries of prehistoric sites, and archaeologists' knowledge of Denver's early inhabitants, Nelson and her colleagues bring the region's history to life. From prehistory to the present, this is a compelling narrative of Denver's cultural heritage that will fascinate lay readers, amateur archaeologists, professional archaeologists, and academic historians alike.

Yellowstone National Park is the focal point of Wyoming tourism; however, there is so much more if you know where to look. From rolling prairie, to badlands, to deep forests, to high mountain lakes, and breathtaking peaks, Wyoming's diverse landscape is second to none. In addition, the Wyoming plains contain a rich history of pioneer trails that served as the gateway to the west throughout the 19th century. Most Wyoming travel guides are written to explain tourist attractions in detail once you are already there and require much time and effort to plot a course across the state. This remarkable guide, on the other hand, has the entire state laid out by the highway mile markers so you will always know what is ahead and exactly how to get there. The book is laid out in a clear and concise report style format with brief descriptions, condensed information and a star rating system that allows you to easily make informed decisions about what to visit. Detailed directions, GPS coordinates and elevations are provided for 1900 entries, including: nearly 600 natural, scenic and historic attractions; nearly 100 easily accessible hiking trails; over 300 public campgrounds and dispersed camping areas; over 30 rest areas; and over 60 RV dump stations. It makes an excellent companion book to any other Wyoming travel book and pays for itself many times over in time and fuel savings. NOTES: Due to the extensive amount of information contained in the book, it is not a pocket guide but instead measure 8.3 x 11.7 x 0.5 inches. There are no photos, but dozens of color photos can be seen on the book website. Complete coverage of Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, Fossil Butte National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site, Snowy Range, Bighorn Mountains, Wind River Mountains, Sinks Canyon State Park, Guernsey State Park, Glendo State Park, Keyhole State Park, Green River Lakes, Casper Mountain Park, Jackson Hole and much more.
