Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Würzburg (PHILOSOPHISCHE FAKULTÄT I), course: Varieties of English, language: English, abstract: Looking at the English language in Australia with its short history of 200 years, the question arises whether Australian English can already be seen as a variety on its own right. To find a competent answer to this question one has to consider the linguistic development of the language as well as the concrete linguistic features which occur in this variety. The linguistic development is intimately connected with the historical background of a country. Thus in a first part of this term paper a short overview on the history of Australia is given to build the fundament for the following analysis of the linguistic development of the English language in Australia. Then the concrete linguistic features are evaluated and applied in the practical part of this term paper. So, as a last step, the question, whether Australian English has the status of being a variety on its own right, can be answered.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Cologne, course: Varieties of English, 29 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Australian English is often referred to as being very close to British English, although it also contains features which can only be found in Australian English. So the question arises as to which extend it differs from British English and if Australian English is a variety of it? Consequently, there has to be an explanation for this which this paper will attempt to ascertain. To answer this question it is necessary to define the term variety in general and to examine its features. Furthermore, this paper will present a theoretical explanation as to how and why varieties develop. In the following, it will be examined if Australian English is really so close to British English and if it can be claimed to be a variety of it. Therefore, it will be examined if the features defined to be characteristic of a variety in the theoretical sense, can be found in Australian English. The linguistic features of Australian English with special focus on differences on the phonological, morphological, lexical and syntactical level to British English will be presented. On the other hand, there will be a sociolinguistic explanation of these developments with a special focus on the relationship between Australians and the British and the historical development. There will also be an examination of the development of the Australian identity and the attitudes towards Australian English because the language of the people living in the country influences their identity and vice-versa. Following this analysis Australian English and its relationship to British English on a linguistic and sociolinguistic level, this paper will attempt in taking all the aspects explored into account, to state whether Australian English can be claimed to be a variety of British English or not. Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Bamberg, course: Australian English, language: English, abstract: This paper will study the flapping /t/ as it is today and its possible evolution in the nearer future in General Australian English. Australian English (AusE), as it is today, is an English accent that counts with own and also shared features when compared to other variants of English. One of the phenomena that can be encountered in AusE is the realization of a flapped or tapped /t/ allophone (Honeybone 3), a tap alveolar, which is a quality that can easily be perceived when hearing Australians speak. After thoroughly revising English linguistic books though, it is remarkable that few authors appoint this phonetical process to also being part of AusE, but rather of American or Irish English nature among others; some do actually talk about this phenomenon as being also present in English spoken in the southern hemisphere, but they usually don’t specify in which territories, which does not help the reader to find enough information about this specific subject when needed. Furthermore, Some AusE linguists seem to ignore this phenomenon when writing their research papers. Opportunely, there are a few authors who do correlate this as also being an AusE feature. This being said, their investigation will be taken as a starting point for further research on this subject. The study to follow will target to get enough information about the flapping /t/ in AusE, trying to focus as much as possible in General AusE, by pointing out what it is, how it emerged and what is the current status of the phenomenon, in order to later on be able to compare these pieces of information with an own research on the ongoing situation based on recordings, which will then lead us to answer to the main question of this paper: What possible development can we expect from the flapping /t/ phenomenon in Australia?

Folklinguistics and Social Meaning in Australian English presents an original study of Australian English and, via this, insights into Australian society. Utilising folklinguistic accounts, it uncovers everyday understandings of contemporary Australian English through variations across linguistic systems (sounds, words, discourse and grammar). Focusing on one variation at time, it explores young speakers’ language use and their evaluations of the same forms. The analysis of talk about talk uncovers ethnic, regional and social Others in social types and prevailing ideologies around Australian English essential for understanding Australian identity-making processes, as well as providing insights and methods relevant beyond this context. These discussions demonstrate that while the linguistic variations may occur in other varieties of English, they are understood through local conceptualisations, and often as uniquely Australian. This book harnesses the value and richness of discourse in explorations of the sociocultural life of language. The findings show that analysis attending to language ideologies and identities can help discover the micro–macro links needed in understanding social meanings. The volume explores a wide range of language features but also provides a deep contemplation of Australian English.

Australia's English raises many questions among experts and the general public. What is it like? How has English changed by being transplanted to other parts of the world? Does the rise of AusE and other varieties endanger the role of English as a world language? Past studies have often been selective, focusing on the esoteric and non-typical, and ignoring the contact situation in which Australian English has developed. This book and its companion, Australia's Many Voices. Ethnic Englishes, Indigenous and Migrant Languages. Policy and Education, develop and apply a comprehensive and integrative approach that anchors English in the entire 'habitat' of Australia's languages that it both upset and transformed. Based on a wide range of data and on the assumption that all manifestations of Australian English must cohere as a system, this book retraces the social, psycholinguistic and linguistic history of the language. It locates the contact with indigenous and migrant languages and with American English in the appropriate sociohistorical context and shows how several layers of migration have shaped it. As it stratified, it was gradually accepted and developed into a fully-fledged national variety or epicentre of English that could be raised to the status of national language. Implications on educational policy and attempts to reach out into the Asia-Pacific region have followed logically from national status. The study is of interest for specialists of English and Australian Studies as well as a range of other disciplines. Its discursive, non-technical style and presentation makes it accessible to non-specialists with no background in linguistics.
