In Earth in Mind, noted environmental educator David W. Orr focuses not on problems in education, but on the problem of education. Much of what has gone wrong with the world, he argues, is the result of inadequate and misdirected education that: alienates us from life in the name of human domination; causes students to worry about how to make a living before they know who they are; overemphasizes success and careers; separates feeling from intellect and the practical from the theoretical; deadens the sense of wonder for the created world. The crisis we face, Orr explains, is one of mind, perception, and values. It is, first and foremost, an educational challenge. The author begins by establishing the grounds for a debate about education and knowledge. He describes the problems of education from an ecological perspective, and challenges the "terrible simplifiers" who wish to substitute numbers for values. He follows with a presentation of principles for re-creating education in the broadest way possible, discussing topics such as biophilia, the disciplinary structure of knowledge, the architecture of educational buildings, and the idea of ecological intelligence. Orr concludes by presenting concrete proposals for reorganizing the curriculum to draw out our affinity for life.

This book is a new approach in the development of global tectonics. It deals with a new variant of the Earth's expansion concept: the model of 'eduction', i.e. of lifting up the mantel material onto the Earth's surface in the active margins of oceans and non-closed character of the mantle currents. The author developed a thorough and comprehensive scientific scenario of tectonic evolution of the Earth using the idea of its radius increase. The most significant and interesting part of the book is a critical analysis of the history of development of plate tectonics. Another remarkable part of the book is the explanation of existing seismicity --- its specific and geographical distribution from the point of view of tectonic evolution of the lithosphere. This book should serve as a trigger for a critical review of contemporary tectonic concepts.

In this book Thomas Bonner unveils the dramatic story of women's long struggle to become physicians. Focusing both on international comparisons and on the personal histories of many of the pioneers, their determination and dedication, their setbacks and successes, he shows how European and American women gradually broke through the wall of resistance to women in medicine. In pre-Civil War America, in Tsarist Russia, in Victorian England, special schools of medicine for women were widely established as early as 1850 as a kind of way-station on the road to medical coeducation. Only in Switzerland and France, at first, could women study medicine in classes with men. As a result, hundreds and then thousands of women from Russia, Eastern Europe, England, and the United States enrolled in Swiss or Parisian universities to gain the first-class education that was denied them at home. In all, Bonner shows, at least 10,000 women left their homelands to study medicine in foreign countries before 1914. Coming almost literally from the ends of the earth, they formed the largest migration of professional women in history.

In response to the growing national concern about precollege science education, this guide was developed to assist school administrators, curriculum planners, teachers, and scientists in incorporating earth science in K-12 science curricula. The guide is divided into four main sections that provide a framework for planning and implementing earth science education programs. The sections are as follows: (1) goals to guide the development of K-12 earth science curricula (in the areas of stewardship, appreciation, scientific thought, and knowledge); (2) concepts that are basic to understanding the earth and its interacting systems (with discussions of the earth in space, earth systems, geologic time, change, evolution, cycles, scales, and resources); (3) recommendations for teaching earth science subject matter in grades K-12 (discussed in terms of curriculum objectives, how students learn, teaching strategies, and assessment); and (4) recommendations for implementing new earth science curricula in the schools (discussed in the context of four essential tasks, namely, developing materials, developing support, preservice and inservice teacher education, and partnerships). The goals, concepts, and recommendations were developed by scientists, science educators, school administrators, and teachers who attended one or more of six regional conferences conducted by the American Geological Institute.
