As I lay on the floor lifeless, watching my daughter cry Mommy, Mommy, get up! Mommy, please get up! I could see the pain in her face and hear it in her voice. I cried out, Lord, save my soul and take care of my children! Immediately, I was returned back to my body. I am so glad that when I left the Lord, he didnt leave me!

The Berlin Palace - a brochure (German and English) about the history and future of the Berlin Palace, with a large number of pictures, a floorplan of the palace, vitae of the most important architects and a chronological table from 1443 to 2003.

The results of the Amuq Valley Regional Projects (AVRP) presented in this volume are the outcome of eight seasons of intensive fieldwork (1995-2002) representing the first phase of a long-range, broadly-based archaeological investigation in the Hatay region of southern Turkey. From its inception the research was conceived as a series of coordinated field projects. The detailed and expansive scope of the regional project originated from a number of theoretical and methodological considerations. Encouraged in part by its potential for providing the examination of interactions between technological developments, complex social institutions, natural resources, and the environment, the original Oriental Institute project (then called the Syro-Hittite Expedition) in the 1930s was formally reactivated in 1995. The strategy of taking a regional approach with a series of linked field projects established an unusual multi-institutional laboratory to research key themes that it is hoped will provide explanations about regional and interregional relationships. The initial stage of the research strategy focused on contextualising the settlements by survey, followed by site-specific investigations prior to the resumption of new excavations. The regional surveys targeted the Amuq Valley (the plain of Antioch, today Antakya) and the delta of the Orontes River (today Samandag). Artifactual and micro-scale studies were the focus of the third scale of investigations.

This publication records the innovative approach that led to the creation of City Palace, a new type of building combining civic functions with offices and retail space within a 45 storey tower in the rapidly developing Moscow City business district. What is special about this project is the singular - some might say provocative - collaboration between architect (Tony Kettle and Philip Nikandrov of international architects RMJM) and artist (Karen Forbes) which has resulted in the construction of this striking structure. The approach is highly unusual as it combines architect with artist in a real partnership from the very first pencil sketch through to the final construction. The resulting design is a marriage between symbolic wedding palace functions and the commercial reality of office and retail space. Charting the evolution of the project, this book also explores the real creative value of in-depth collaboration at this scale, a method which could be set to become increasingly familiar.

A Florentine Patrician and His Palace

These studies make a companion to Alessandro Perosa's edition (1960) of pagine sceltefrom the Zibaldone of Giovanni Rucellai (1403-1481). The Zibaldone was intended as a guide to Rucellai's two sons in the conduct of their lives and is by turns family history, record of things done and seen, book of commercial management, chronicle of artistic patronage, Florentine history, and moral treatise. The volume now published is centred on the character and achievement of Giovanni Rucellai and, in particular, on the palace which embodies the aspirations of this Florentine merchant patrician. It is the result of collaboration between three Italian, one Australian and one American scholar, under the general direction of Professor Nocolai Rubinstein who has written the Introduction. Two contributions are in Italian, the remainder are in English. Professor Perosa, of the University of Florence, has followed his edition with a comprehensive account, in Italian, of Giovanni in his intellectual and ethical milieu. Dr F. W. Kent, of Monash University, contributes a monograph on Rucellai's career as merchant, citizen, builder and patron. Dr Brenda Preyer, of the University of Texas at Austin, drawing heavily, like Dr Kent, on new archival evidence which both have uncovered, adds an exhaustive examination of Giovanni's acquisition of land for his building projects and of the stages in which his palace was constructed. She also re-examines the involvement of Leon Battista Alberti in Giovanni's enterprises. The late Professor Piero Sanpaolesi, of the University of Florence, has provided a brief chapter in Italian on the architecture of the Rucellai Palace, and Professor Roberto Salvini, also of the University of Florence, an essay on the frescoes in the altana of the palace, which were rediscovered in 1950 and which are here reproduced in full for the first time.
