GPS NAVIGATION: Principles and Applications sets forth the application of GPS navigation and its basic principles. The book is divided into ten chapters. The first three chapters present the development, system structure, space-time reference frame for navigation and positioning, and the satellite's kinematic parameters of global positioning system (GPS). The fourth chapter introduces the broadcast signals of GPS satellites. The fifth, sixth and seventh chapter analyses the observation equation and the positioning theory of dynamic and static for GPS navigation and positioning. The eighth chapter gives the GPS carrier speed and attitude measurement methods. The ninth chapter focuses on the use of Kalman filter for GPS and INS integrated methods and some typical programs. GPS / INS integrated navigation system is the more ideal system in the national defence. The tenth chapter introduces some application knowledge of the GPS technology in some more important area.

Obtaining sensor orientation by direct measurements is a rapidly emerging mapping technology. Modern GPS and INS systems allow for the direct determination of platform position and orientation at an unprecedented accuracy. In airborne surveying, aircraft trajectory and platform orientation can be determined at the level of few cm and 20-30 arcsec, respectively at an almost continuous time scale. The use of such integrated GPS/INS systems offers immediate benefits for largeformat camera-based airborne surveying by substantially reducing the need for ground control and by basically eliminating aerial-triangulation, except for system calibration. For emerging sensors such as LIDAR, RADAR, multi-/hyperspectral imagers, however, the use of the direct orientation systems is mandatory since indirect methods such as control point-based aerial-triangulation are not feasible. ODOT Aerial Engineering has been operating an airplane with a large-format Zeiss Jena LMK2000 camera. The introduction of a modern GPS/INS-based direct orientation system was not only highly desirable for economic reasons, but also mandatory if ODOT wanted to keep up with technological developments. Since ODOT predominantly performs corridor surveys over the highway infrastructure, the use of direct orientation makes it even more attractive in this case, since the savings due to the elimination of control points are quite substantial. By establishing a GPS/INS-based direct orientation technology for ODOT aerial operations, the foundations was given for future imaging sensor extensions such as the introduction of LIDAR systems or the like.

"The management of the Global Positioning System (GPS) by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has been the subject of increasing criticism by the global community of users in general and particularly in Europe. The European Union (EU) is considering several Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) options that would provide it with varying degrees of control, autonomy, and specificity of use. These include various GPS, and its own GNSS dubbed Galilio. We discuss the concerns of the global community with respect to GPS and the motives that drive the GPS globalization debate. We describe the Galileo concept and consider the likeihood for its realization."--Page 1.

Every yacht or motor boat now uses GPS as their primary source of positional information when navigating. The page layout of this logbook has been designed for clear entry of GPS positions and waypoints. The left-hand spread is for passage planning and the right-hand spread is for plotting positions on passage. There is also space to include narrative.
