"My granddaddy would get mad at all of us. He couldn't just get mad at one of us. 'Ain't nobody got... You know what? Go to bed! All y'all, go to bed!' It'd be like two o'clock in the afternoon. 'Go to bed!'" Bernie Mac, the royal king of the Original Kings of Comedy, is salty and pissed off. The Chicago-bred performer has issues to get off his chest, and he doesn't mince words when he lets loose. No surprise, his live appearances have earned him a reputation as perhaps the truest voice of modern humor. Now, Mac has captured his comedic genius in print with his hilarious debut book. Tearing through a wide range of topics with equal parts insight and irreverence, Bernie Mac shares views that may not sit well with everyone -- especially if you're caught in the crosshairs of his rants ("Kids today don't get the kind of injuries we used to get as children -- cut, bruised. Now, these lil' muh'fuckas just continuously get shot"). Still, his way of looking at the world will probably make you think and it's all but guaranteed to make you laugh. Taking on superstar athletes, the movie business, his fellow comedians, his marriage, and his friends and family ("You always knew when your grandmother was at home because her wig was on that little Styrofoam stand"), Mac unleashes side-splitting riffs on sex, religion, hygiene, money, and more. Nobody is safe; nothing is sacred. Not even Bernie himself. Throughout I Ain't Scared Of You, Mac turns his humor inward, firing off self-deprecating salvos about his golf game, his own personal hypocrisies, even his sexual prowess -- "Women got toys...You can't compete with no dildo." Mac's insights have earned him critical acclaim and international popularity. Now, I Ain't Scared Of You captures Bernie Mac's humor whole -- unadorned, unpretentious, and unafraid.

So many people are defeated by life’s trials and tribulations because they put their trust in man and not in God. Trials will always occur in some form or fashion in our lives. We are either entering a trial, in the midst of a trial or getting over a trial. When we go through trials we all react differently especially when we face fiery trials and tribulations. Your fiery trial may be different than mine. Fiery trials may involve your health, finances, family problems, addictions, legal problems, homelessness and poverty. Some people react to trials through worldly solutions such as, alcohol, drugs, and searching for answers in all the wrong places from all the wrong people. Some people check out completely by committing suicide because they feel that there is no other way out of their circumstances. Some people go to God for answers and they find peace because they trust God to solve their problems. This book teaches us to trust God in all circumstances no matter what our fiery trials may be. Proverbs 3:5 and 6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding: In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” We should trust God even in the fiery furnace just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did when they had their fiery furnace trial. This book reveals how you can have hope in hopeless situations, comfort and joy in the midst of suffering and peace in the midst of chaos when you trust God even in the fiery furnace.

In this honest and stunning novel, now a major motion picture directed by Barry Jenkins, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions–affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche.

Written to commemorate the Bicentennial in 1976, James A. Michener’s magnificent saga of the West is an enthralling celebration of the frontier. Brimming with the glory of America’s past, the story of Colorado—the Centennial State—is manifested through its people: Lame Beaver, the Arapaho chieftain and warrior, and his Comanche and Pawnee enemies; Levi Zendt, fleeing with his child bride from the Amish country; the cowboy, Jim Lloyd, who falls in love with a wealthy and cultured Englishwoman, Charlotte Seccombe. In Centennial, trappers, traders, homesteaders, gold seekers, ranchers, and hunters are brought together in the dramatic conflicts that shape the destiny of the legendary West—and the entire country. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Centennial “A hell of a book . . . While he fascinates and engrosses, Michener also educates.”—Los Angeles Times “An engrossing book . . . imaginative and intricate . . . teeming with people and giving a marvelous sense of the land.”—The Plain Dealer “Michener is America’s best writer, and he proves it once again in Centennial. . . . If you’re a Michener fan, this book is a must. And if you’re not a Michener fan, Centennial will make you one.”—The Pittsburgh Press “An absorbing work . . . Michener is a superb storyteller.”—BusinessWeek

GOD HAD ME In His Hands All The Time is a true story of mental, verbal and physical abuse of a child from memory. Some of the names have been changed. Even though I am an adult, I can remember most of it like it was yesterday, while part of my mind seem to put up a shield to block out the abuse. I can feel the pressure on my brain, but it wont release it. Childens minds are very fragile thats why a good and well nurtured environment is so important during their growth. I knew God had to be carrying me like the poem Foot Prints in the Sand, because otherwise I would not have survived. I couldnt see it or understand why it was happening to me. All I ever knew was hurt and pain. The abuse scared me. Through the years I looked for love in the wrong places and in the wrong people. Growing up unloved and unwanted makes you yearn just that much harder, because you never stop looking and taking chances without thinking. Wanting to belong and loved is what food is to the body in order to survive. You always tell yourself this person will love me. Every time I put my heart out on the line it get crushed. I always found myself struggling to survive, even as an adult. I felt beat down with no self esteem. I found TRUE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE for the first time when I accepted JESUS the CHRIST in my life. I was so shocked because I was on the receiving end of love this time. Something I never had before.

Trent Tucker, the protagonist of this hilarious satire, hates reality TV. Unfortunately, his job at Nova Consulting involves the creation of new reality shows that are even more outrageous and excessive than those now on television. Surrounded by colleagues who could easily be characters in the own reality show—dumb blonde, angry black man, flamboyant homosexual, frosty bitch, fast-talking Sicilian and their megalomaniacal boss, P.T. Beauregard—Trent's immersion is complete. The characters in Reality: the novel, behave a lot like their television counterparts as they bicker with each other incessantly, backstab their co-workers, find themselves on a deserted island and become involved in a murder plot—all good, clean fun that mimics the fantasy lives they feverishly try to create for their anxious network clients.

"What else would you wish for?" Daddy says. "If you could have anything in the world, what would you wish for?" I shrug. "Oh, I don't know. Maybe . . ." "Maybe what?" "For us to live better than we do." He does not say anything. In 1948, award-winning author Ruth White lived in Jewell Valley, a coal camp nestled between the hills of southwestern Virginia, with her mother, still mourning for a baby who died four years earlier; her father, who spent the weekends and most of his pay out drinking; and her three older sisters, Audrey, Yvonne, and Eleanor. Told in Audrey's voice, this is how the author imagines Audrey's experiences during a time of great trauma for the White family – and what happened before they were able to live a better life. This snapshot of life in a coal camp, complete with everyday heartaches and joys – as well as stories, songs, and jokes – is Ruth White's most personal work to date. Little Audrey is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Hailed by Frank O’Connor as one of “the greatest living storytellers,” J. F. Powers, who died in 1999, stands with Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, and Raymond Carver among the authors who have given the short story an unmistakably American cast. In three slim collections of perfectly crafted stories, published over a period of some thirty years and brought together here in a single volume for the first time, Powers wrote about many things: baseball and jazz, race riots and lynchings, the Great Depression, and the flight to the suburbs. His greatest subject, however—and one that was uniquely his—was the life of priests in Chicago and the Midwest. Powers’s thoroughly human priests, who include do-gooders, gladhanders, wheeler-dealers, petty tyrants, and even the odd saint, struggle to keep up with the Joneses in a country unabashedly devoted to consumption. These beautifully written, deeply sympathetic, and very funny stories are an unforgettable record of the precarious balancing act that is American life.
