This text is designed to provide physicists with an accessible introduction to the interacting boson model, an approach to nuclear structure that was first proposed in 1974, with several important extensions and generalizations appearing over the last decade. The value of this model lies in the fact that the traditional shell model of nuclear structure is limited in its application to light nuclei or heavier nuclei with only a few valence nucleons outside closed shells. Beyond these limits, the model requires prohibitively large-scale calculations. For this reason, the introduction of collective models has been necessary, including the approach described here. Algebraic descriptions for the effects of clustering, permanent octupole deformation, and giant resonances are included. And, for the description of odd nuclei, the interacting boson-fermion model has been introduced, and nuclear supersymmetries associated with it have been analyzed.

During the week of June 6-9, 1978, a group of 36 physicists from 15 countries met in Erice, Sicily, for the first specialized seminar on "Interacting Bosons in Nuclear Physics". The countries represented were Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Yugoslavia. The Seminar was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI), the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRST), the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion (NATO) and the Regional Sicilian Government (ERS). The purpose of the Seminar was to discuss the present status of the Interacting Boson Model both from the theoretical and experi mental point of view. Some of the lectures presented in this book summarize particular aspects of the model and are based on previously published work (F. Iachello, R.F. Casten, Z. Sujkowski, L. Hassel gren, H. Emling, I. Talmi, T. Otsuka, J. McGrory, A.E.L. Dieperink and A. Arima). Others are entirely new. In particular, the lec tures of O. Scholten and A. Gelberg and V. Kaup present the first extensive set of calculations based on the proton-neutron boson model, while the lecture of J.N. Ginocchio describes a fermion model with properties identical to those of the interacting boson model. Also new are the le~tures of D.R. Bes, R.A. Broglia and P.F.

Medium heavy nuclei with mass number A=60-90 exhibit a variety of complex collective properties, provide a laboratory for double beta decay studies, and are a region of all heavy N=Z nuclei. This book discusses these three aspects of nuclear structure using Deformed Shell Model and the Spin-Isospin Invariant Interacting Boson Model naturally generated by fermionic SO(8) symmetry. Using these two models, the book describes properties of medium heavy nuclei with mass number A=60-90. It provides a good reference for future nuclear structure experiments using radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities. Various results obtained by the authors and other research groups are also explained in this book.

Symmetries in Atomic Nuclei aims to present an overview of recent applications of symmetry to the description of atomic nuclei. Special care is given to a pedagogical introduction of symmetry concepts using simple examples. After a historical overview of the applications of symmetry in nuclear physics, progress in the field during the last decade is reviewed. Special emphasis is put on the introduction of neutron-proton and boson-fermion degrees of freedom. Their combination leads to a supersymmetric description of pairs and quartets of nuclei. Both theoretical aspects and experimental signatures of dynamical (super)symmetries are carefully discussed. Case studies show how these symmetries are displayed by real atomic nuclei which have been studied experimentally using state-of-the art spectroscopy. This book focuses on nuclear structure physics and has been written by active investigators in the field, but its scope is wider and is intended for final-year or post-graduate students and researchers interested in understanding the power and beauty of symmetry methods in physics.

This book provides an understandable review of SU(3) representations, SU(3) Wigner–Racah algebra and the SU(3) ⊃ SO(3) integrity basis operators, which are often considered to be difficult and are avoided by most nuclear physicists. These proceedings comprise the contents of a major international conference on Perspectives of the Interacting Boson Model. Occasioned by the 20th Anniversary of this model, and attended by approx. 130 scientists from 29 countries, the topics focused on current and future research, which relates to the IBM. This model has now become one of the standard approaches to nuclear structure and has helped usher in a renaissance in that field and a new, unified perspective that focuses on dynamical symmetries and the key role of the valence nucleons. Band Structure and Nuclear Dynamics contains a compilation of papers that were presented at the International Conference on Band Structure and Nuclear Dynamics. This volume examines the relationships between phenomenological models, such as the VMI, IBA and Bohr-Mottelson models, and it discusses the attempts to provide microscopic foundations for these models. It also reviews other boson expansion techniques. The book includes the experiments on rotating nuclei, which indicate that different phases, shapes, and angular momentum coupling schemes are suitable for different spin regions and different bands; and the HFB-cranking model, which provides a theoretical framework for the interpretation of these rotational phenomena. This volume is subdivided into six parts. The first part focuses on phenomenological collective models, including the theory of nuclear collective motion, VMI and other related models, and the boson-fermion model. Part two discusses strongly deformed nuclei, including the band structure and the structure of the collective bands in it from a microscopic point of view. This part also presents the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory and the application of the cranking model to Yb bands and band crossings. The third part focuses on transitional nuclei and covers IBA models, symmetric rotor interpretation of interpretation of transitional nuclei, electromagnetic properties of excited bands, and boson models. Part four describes the very high spin states and its Nilsson-Strutinsky model and self-consistent theory. Part five includes three special topics and Part six concludes by providing topics for a round-table discussion.
