All Christians yearn to live at the center of God's will. But how to discern his will is an art that eludes many of us. And the advice we get often conflicts. Some tell us to look for a divine "blueprint"-the one perfect plan for our lives that we need to find. We are encouraged to search the Scriptures and hunt for signs, trying to uncover the map of our lives that God has drawn. Others have rejected the blueprint school of guidance for the "wisdom school." With minds renewed by the teaching of Scripture, we are to develop the wisdom necessary to make wise choices. We are told not to expect that there is just one answer to God's will for every decision we face. Several may be possible. The difficulty with both approaches, writes Gordon Smith, is that they minimize the presence and voice of God in times of choice. Instead, he argues for a third way. He suggests that we develop discernment as a spiritual discipline. By stressing the personal aspects of growing in our relationship with God, we can understand his will, not just in times of crisis but throughout our daily lives. This book provides no magic formulas, no recipes for guaranteed success-just a lot of insight, gleaned from centuries of lived Christian experience, that will guide and encourage you in the art of discerning God's will.

We all long to know the will of God in our lives, to obtain answers to our prayers, and to receive tangible evidence of the personal care of our heavenly Father. We deeply desire to hear His voice. And here's the good news: God is not silent. He is constantly reaching out to each of us. Often His voice is quiet and can be heard only in prayer. He frequently breaks into our lives with timely remedies, miraculous encounters, and surprising circumstances that can be explained only by the reality of a loving and caring God. Popular Catholic author and radio host Teresa Tomeo has gathered an inspiring collection of such "Godcidences" from her life, as well as personal stories from a variety of Catholics"€"including broadcasters Joan Lewis, Al Kresta, Steve Ray, and authors Greg and Julie Alexander"€"of the unmistakable ways God has spoken to them. In these pages, you'll read about ordinary and extraordinary "come-to-Jesus moments," such as: ¢€¢The mysterious man who appeared to an anxious couple at a deserted train station in Italy to give them assistance ¦€¦ and then just as quickly disappeared ¢€¢How a six-word sentence from a husband to his embittered wife served to redirect their marriage from bitterness toward reconciliation and renewal ¢€¢A business offer that arrived out of the blue, just as financial ruin threatened the future of a wife and husband recently jolted by an Alzheimer's diagnosis These and many more profound and intimate stories will deepen your faith as they remind you of the active presence of God in your life. Each comes with lessons for you to apply to your life and reflections to help you grow in your ability to hear and respond to the still, small, powerful voice of God.

With sales of more than 1.4 million copies, Kay Arthur’s deeply enriching New Inductive Study Series is nearing completion. In this newest study, readers will mine gems of truth from the book of Jeremiah using the hands-on process of observation, interpretation, and application to dig through the text. Jeremiah’s warnings to a nation that has turned its back on the Lord echo through the ages and speak to cultures today. As readers see the prophet’s heartbreak at the nation’s apostasy, his sense of urgency, and the resistance he faces, they will identify with God’s people throughout the ages and receive assurance that nothing happening today is taking God by surprise. Even in the darkest seasons, readers can be confident that evil will be judged, righteousness will be rewarded, and God’s plans for His people—to give them a future and a hope—stand firm.

TALKING TO GOD IS EASY. IT’S THE LISTENING THAT’S THE HARD PART. Although most of us can talk with ease to our best friend, many of us aren’t so good at keeping quiet and hearing what our friend has to say. So it is with God. For true communication with Him, we must learn to listen through understanding His Word. Dr. Charles Stanley’s Listening to God, part of the Life Principles Study Series, presents a sound way to explore the Word and hear God’s truths. You’ll learn to identify with the passages, recognize your emotional response, reflect on the passages’ meaning and take steps to apply what you’ve learned.

Listening for God religion and Moral Dis

Listening for God proceeds from the authors belief that, across a wide spectrum of outlooks, people are attracted to religion, yet wary of it. The book is intended to speak, in an honest and reflective way, to those who have conflicting feelings about religion, and are put off by the needlessly polarized and blithely self-assured style of much writing about it. Grounded in his won religious tradition yet manifesting great respect and appreciation for other traditions, Lesnick recounts the odyssey of his own encounter with religion, from a mild form of conventional adherence to Conservative Judaism as an adolescent, to a long period of alienation from all religion, to a gradual and deepening re-engagement with Judaism through his sympathetic exposure to religions.Lesnick articulates the ways in which the author has found it illuminating to turn to religion as an aid to discernment of moral truth, rather than as a source of metaphysical knowledge or belief. The God of which he speaks is both the repository of truth about moral life and force that draws him to struggle to discern and follow it.The book offers the reader a bridge between apparent polarities too often found in the world and ourselves-between emotion and reason, experience and authority, knowledge and belief, faith and doubt, ethics and ritual, hope and despair. Written by a teacher of law, it asks, where do moral imperatives come from, and how do the answers found in religion and in law affect one another? Listening for God is a record of, and a grateful prayer for, sustaining courage and hope in a fallen world.

Discover how God talks to us through everyday happenings. One day, God tells us to hold our to-do lists lightly. There are more important things for today. Another day, God’s message is to think a little harder about how we spend our money. Some days, God just says to relax and enjoy the beauty of the earth. Priorities, values, prayer, music, nature, and hospitality are some of the themes addressed in these 52 reflections on everyday living. Most of the reflections originated as posts on the blog of Whispering Winds Retreat Haven. As you read the reflections in Listening for God, you can expect to: Smile as you read about some amazing “coincidences” and then remember some of the equally amazing “coincidences” in your own life. Think about the choices you make every day and how they reflect your values. Wipe a tear from your eye as you read about Emma seeing God a week before she died. Look at birds a little differently as you wonder what songs they are singing today. Feel your heart soar as you begin to hear God speaking to you regularly in your everyday life.

We live in a noisy world. Yet to meet the God of the Still Small Voice, it will take a quiet place, a stilled soul in order to hear, even more, to listen for the Divine to speak into our darkened void. But speak God will. Create the space. Solitude and silence are necessary gates of opportunity on the pathway to encounter. Experienced and practiced by Jesus, they are the secrets of the ancients. Most often, both are feared because it seems before we ever meet God in these sacred disciplines, we will first meet ourselves. In the silence, inner thoughts once suppressed raise their condemning tones and must be intentionally quenched before we can move further and deeper. It is because, on the other side of the fray, are the more meaningful things of the Spirit, the transformational waters of engaging spirituality. Thus, the battle is fought in the simplicity of the sequestered life, in the barren wilderness, where we are alone with God, where our adversary has lost his edge, and the victory of God's creative Voice finally breaks through to heal and make whole. Neal W. May is Founder and Senior Pastor of Faith Fellowship Church in Macedonia, Ohio, and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Ashland Theological Seminary. He attended Kent State University during the turbulent '60s and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a minor in education. Pastor May has experienced the balance of both Spirit and Word, illumination and reason. He is Founder and President of Hosanna Bible Training Center and instructor of Biblical Interpretation and Contemporary Preaching. In addition, he has served as an adjunct professor for Ashland Theological Seminary where he has taught Small Group Ministry, Communication and Conflict in the Church, and Archaeology of the New Testament.
