From a dovecot in the Dutch village of Dorst to the Concert Hallin Bruges, from an art gallery in Whitechapel to the City Archives of Bordeaux, the oeuvre on which Robbrecht en Daem Architects has worked since its foundation in 1975 has developed a variety and maturity that stands out on the international stage. This insightful book tells the story of Paul Robbrecht, Johannes Robbrecht, and Hilde Daem from the 1980s: their research and interests, their "lost souls," and their successes. Drawing on new and unpublished visual material, a picture and project accordion shows a wide selection of 63 projects that are divided into five key themes from different perspectives.

This book offers a first comprehensive overview of the work of Robbrecht en Daem architects, from their international breakthrough with the AUE pavilions for Documenta IX, up till their recent transformation of the Whitechapel Gallery in London. The architecture of Robbrecht en Daem is represented through the spectrum of seven key projects - a dovecote in Dorst, a public square in Knokke, a woodland cabin in Flanders, two high views in Boston and Lincoln, a concert hall in Bruges, a former dairy in Gaasbeek, their own office in Ghent - which are extensively documented with sketches, plans and photographs by Kristien Daem. An interview of Paul Robbrecht by Stefan Devoldere and Iwan Strauven, offers a privileged view on the intellectual framework of their production, while Maarten Delbeke analyses the body of work with extreme precision. From lookout tower to concert hall, from art gallery to municipal archives an overview of 40 major projects completes this monograph and documents the rare variety and maturity of the architecture of Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem. The influence and position of the ‘Generation 74’ in Flemish and international architecture Five well-known architects who studied together in Ghent, Marie-José Van Hee, Christian Kieckens, Marc Dubois, Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem, can be considered as leading protagonists of their generation. From their education at Sint-Lucas Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts to the present day, their professional careers and legacy have been of great importance to the development of Flemish architecture. In their early works and writings, they established a distinct architectural language, rooted in historical knowledge and with a reflection to art and craftsmanship. Architecture was singled out as a spatial phenomenon with an autonomous logic grounded in inhabitation and experience. This generation represents a significant turn towards architectural autonomy in Flanders which resonated with similar international developments in the late 1970s. Moreover they played a decisive role in the emancipation and professionalization of the architectural culture in Flanders. With contributions by Birgit Cleppe (Ghent University), Sofie De Caigny (CVAa), Maarten Delbeke (Ghent University), Fredie Floré (KU Leuven), William Mann, Yves Schoonjans (KU Leuven), Eireen Schreurs (TU Delft), Lara Schrijver (University of Antwerp), Dirk Somers (Ghent University), Sven Sterken (KU Leuven), Mechthild Stuhlmacher (TU Delft), Hera Van Sande (VUB / KU Leuven), Katrien Vandermarliere, Caroline Voet (KU Leuven)

1960, following as it did the last CIAM meeting, signalled a turning point for the Modern Movement. From then on, architecture was influenced by seminal texts by Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi, and gave rise to the first revisionary movement following Modernism. Bringing together leading experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. It consists of two parts: the first section providing a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

This biennial prize is conceded by the European Union and organized by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation in Barcelona to recognize and reward the quality of the architectural production in Europe. Candidates are nominated by a diverse group of independent experts from all over Europe. In each edition, the jury awards two prizes: the European Community Prize for Contemporary Architecture, presented for conceptual, technical and con-structive qualities of a project, and the Special Mention for Emerging Architect. The Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona incarnates the main objectives that the prize looks for: excellence and innovation in conceptual and constructive terms. The 2011 edition of the biannual publication that accompanies the prize will present the winning project and also the six finalists: the New Museum (Berlin, Germany) by David Chipperfield Architects; the Bronks Theatre (Brussels, Belgium) by MDMA; the MAXXI: Museum of 21st Century Arts (Rome, Italy) by Zaha Hadid Architects; the Danish Radio Concert Hall (Copenhagen, Denmark) by Ateliers Jean Nouvel; the Acropolis Museum (Athens, Greece) by Bernard Tschumi Architects; and the Rehab Center Groot Klimmendaal (Arnhem, The Netherlands) by Architectenbureau Koen van Velsen.
