Human beings have always had a penchant for collecting images. The challenge today is that almost anything and everything in the world is available as a viewable image. Consequently, say O'Connor and Greisdorf, image collections can no longer be the result of ad hoc processes rooted in antiquated methodologies. To this end, they present the reader with an interdisciplinary approach to the principles, practices and belief systems underlying categorization and image management. The book is divided into three parts: defining the nature of images; describing how images are used; and explaining how and why images are collected (including the mechanics of storage and accessibility). Individual chapters contain a historical perspective on the subject matter and supporting research. Liberally enhanced with illustrations from the authors' own collections. For anyone who cognitively engages with image collections either vocationally or avocationally.

The Commission on Preservation and Access has published a number of reports on the preservation and access implications of scanning text and microfilm. This report focuses on what sets the digitization of visual collections apart from other scanning projects. Projects to digitize visual collections present their own unique set of questions and concerns, as well as issues that overlap with digital capture of text. The report provides basic suggestions about planning digitization projects, practical guidelines for working with images, and some final thoughts about the future systems and infrastructure needed to provide collections of images over the long-term. To use digitization as a tool to provide worthwhile, enduring access to treasured cultural and historical resources, one must become informed, establish guidelines, and proceed in rational, measured steps to assure that such reformatting of visual matter is accomplished as well and as cost-effectively as possible. The paper includes the following sections: (1) Introduction (Digital Images as a Reproduction Medium and Of Letters, Lines and Images: Reproductions in Print Publications); (2) The Original Object and Its Reproduction; (3) A Framework for Assessing Image Quality; (4) Color Matching for Image Collections (Color Management, Transformation and Image Output and Controlling Images in Distribution Environments); (5) Documentation and the Integration of Image and Text (Production and Management Documentation); (6) Building Image Collections; and (7) Image Access and User Environments (Rights To Image Collections, Electronic Publications and Use of Visual Materials, and How Will Collections of Digital Images Be Created?). (Contains 45 references.) (SWC)

The field of medical informatics has steadily matured and MEDINFO 92 shows an upturn in the uses of informatics in the health sector. This volume contains significant contributions on diverse issues, a popular field being knowledge-based work: concepts, methodologies, software and other tools, systems and evaluations of systems and experiences. Several papers describe functional integration between differing systems, institutions and even geographic areas; they confirm a trend towards having knowledge-based systems contained in, or integrated with, overall management information systems serving the physician as well as the rest of the health support team. As well as contributions on those topics that have been covered in MEDINFO congresses since their inception in 1974, such as bibliographic systems, nursing informatics and hospital information systems, other issues addressed include data standards such as semantics, syntax and communication standards; the quality, accuracy and ethical values of medical data; and developments in networking.

Exploiting Images and Image Collections in the New Media Gold Mine Or Legal Minefield

This book takes as its primary focus the copyright and other intellectual property issues which arise out of the commercial exploitation and digitisation of images. The digital revolution is taking software companies, educational institutions, museums, and motion picture and photo archives into uncharted legal and technological terrain. In particular, the nature of digital images makes more evident the legal, ethical and practical problems that are as yet unresolved in the print media. New information technologies have pushed to the forefront the use of images for commercial products as software companies search to acquire rights to scan photographs or paintings in libraries, photo and film archives and museum collections worldwide. At the same time museums and archives using multimedia to open up their collections to the public recognise that they hold financial assets capable of commercial exploitation. Fourteen articles written by prominent intellectual property lawyers and government officials discuss legal, policy and practical issues in the protection and commercial exploitation of images and image collections. The essays present the views of various industries and governments, and provide national perspectives from Argentina, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as a discussion of efforts at international harmonisation. The book includes a useful collection of original source material and sample forms in appendix, including an annotated CD-ROM Licensing Agreement. Exploiting Images and Image Collections in the New Media will provide a valuable and unique resource for intellectual property and media lawyers, executives in the entertainment industry and new technology companies, museum directors, policy makers and regulators.

Functional Neuroimaging

The 1990s have been designated by congress and the president as the decade of the brain, in part due to recognition of the expansion of knowledge and technology in the realm of neuroscience. Functional neuroimaging encompasses the technique of electrophysiology (EEG), magnetoecephalography (MEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET). Through these techniques, high resolution, 3 dimensional anatomical information can be obtained ofthe brain and it's functioning in normal and diseases states. Neuroscientists everywhere use neuroimaging in research, and these techniques are also used regularly by clinicians, and increasingly by biopsychologists. Given the increase in the number of techniques, and their diversity of applications, there is a need for a comprehensive volume to address both the technology and function of their use. Key Features * Addresses the technical problems of image registration * Compares different approaches to inter-subject and intra-subject analysis * Explores the synergestic advantages of multivolume integration * Divided into four sections devoted to relevant, timely issues
