Special Agent for the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Services, Tracey Whittington, takes down wildlife traffickers and more, but what she doesn't expect is to be in a shootout, multiple times, when the business turns deadly. Nor does she suspect she'll be working with Hal Haverton, who serves as a part-time deputy for Yuma Town, Colorado, and runs his own horse ranch. As long as he doesn't stop her investigative work—she has been placed on administrative leave due to the last shootout—she'll be just fine. Hal Haverton has every intention of keeping the wild cat safe, even if it means helping her to solve the case when every time he turns around, she's involved in another shootout. When her boss asks their good friend, the sheriff, to have one of his deputies serve as a bodyguard for the cougar shifter, Hal's all for it. So is the other deputy, but Hal's got this covered. Even if getting somewhere with the lady means having his gun ready at all times. There are definite perks to getting to know the Special Agent better—if they live long enough to do something about it.

Understanding the Financial Conduct Authority

The Financial Conduct Authority began its work in April 2013 with a post-crisis mandate to take pre-emptive action against firms. When problems occur, the FCA increasingly takes disciplinary action against individual senior managers as well as against the firm. Most of these cases are tragedies – if the individuals concerned understood the likely outcome they would have behaved differently. This book sets out the psychology of the FCA and covers the ‘hot spots’ that senior management and their compliance officers need to get right. The key to the FCA approach is ‘conduct risk’. This deliberately undefined term includes anything that might cause a problem to the FCA in the achievement of its regulatory mission. The FCA sees the world through the lens of risk; everything, including firms themselves, are assessed on how likely they are to cause the FCA to fail in its role of securing appropriate protection for consumers, enhancing the integrity of the UK financial system and promoting effective competition in the interests of consumers. Conduct risk is about behaviour and the FCA is keen to understand the drivers of human behaviour and how they can use them to bring about the outcomes they wish to see. Firms’ culture is also under the microscope, all the more so since the recent trading incidents where groups of traders colluded across firms to manipulate LIBOR and the foreign exchange markets. A chapter on Culture examines how firms can start work to prepare for the FCA’s increasing engagement on culture. The starting point of course is to understand what culture is.

Effects of Deregulation on Safety

Effects of Deregulation on Safety provides a comprehensive overview of the safety experiences of these three case study industries and their implications for the U.S. nuclear power industry. The treatment of the subject is not highly technical, and hence is accessible to a wide range of readers with interests in the subject matter. The book draws on literature from roughly 250 references, ranging from brief news articles to book-length studies of deregulation in a particular industry, as well as original in-depth interviews with representatives of all three case study industries. This wealth of empirical background information allows the book to go beyond mere speculation about the possible adverse safety consequences of deregulation, to identify situations in which particular adverse safety consequences actually occurred. The experience of the case study industries indicates that economic deregulation need not be incompatible with a reasonable safety record, especially in those aspects of safety that are positively related to productivity. But that safety also cannot be taken for granted after deregulation. Careful management attention is needed in order to avoid the types of safety problems that were associated with deregulation in the case study industries.

Comprehensive Criminal Procedure, Fifth Edition is perfect for all introductory courses in criminal procedure law (including both investigation and adjudication courses, as well as comprehensive and survey courses). The casebook focuses primarily on constitutional criminal procedure law, but also covers relevant statutes and court rules. The casebook is deliberately challenging—it is designed for teachers who want to explore deeply not only the contemporary state of the law, but also its historical and theoretical foundations. The casebook incorporates a particular emphasis on empirical knowledge about the real-world impacts of law-in-action; the significance of race and class; the close relationship between criminal procedure law and substantive criminal law; the cold reality that hard choices sometimes must be made in a world of limited criminal justice resources; and, finally, the recognition that criminal procedure law always should strive to achieve both fairness to the accused and justice for society as a whole. New to the Fifth Edition: Cutting edge developments in caselaw, statutory material, and academic commentary An important reordering of certain areas of the Fourth Amendment and related materials that make them even more user-friendly Insightful examination of the turmoil in the modern Fourth Amendment cases as the Supreme Court, notably splintered over the appropriate methods of interpreting the Constitution, faces the implications of rapidly changing technology. The latest in case law, statutory material, and academic commentary about due process, the right to counsel, pretrial practice, guilty pleas, trial rights, sentencing, double jeopardy, and post-trial procedures Increased emphasis on the role of prosecutorial decision-making An updated treatment of the critical role of plea bargaining A new section on forfeitures and the Eighth Amendment Professors and students will benefit from: A rigorous and challenging criminal procedure casebook with careful presentation and editing A prestigious author team that incorporates the latest and most highly respected developments in legal scholarship in the field of criminal procedure law An appropriate balance of explanatory text and secondary material Thematic organization structured around important main themes Extensive revisions and updates A casebook that is the only criminal procedure casebook on the market today that enables students to understand the roots of the modern controversy over privacy and security in a digital age
