When Philip Hensher realized that he didn't know what a close friend's handwriting looked like ("bold or crabbed, sloping or upright, italic or rounded, elegant or slapdash"), he felt that something essential was missing from their friendship. It dawned on him that having abandoned pen and paper for keyboards, we have lost one of the ways by which we come to recognize and know another person. People have written by hand for thousands of years— how, Hensher wondered, have they learned this skill, and what part has it played in their lives? The Missing Ink tells the story of this endangered art. Hensher introduces us to the nineteenth-century handwriting evangelists who traveled across America to convert the masses to the moral worth of copperplate script; he examines the role handwriting plays in the novels of Charles Dickens; he investigates the claims made by the practitioners of graphology that penmanship can reveal personality. But this is also a celebration of the physical act of writing: the treasured fountain pens, chewable ballpoints, and personal embellishments that we stand to lose. Hensher pays tribute to the warmth and personality of the handwritten love note, postcards sent home, and daily diary entries. With the teaching of handwriting now required in only five states and many expert typists barely able to hold a pen, the future of handwriting is in jeopardy. Or is it? Hugely entertaining, witty, and thought-provoking, The Missing Ink will inspire readers to pick up a pen and write.

A Canon of Empty Fathers: Paternity in Portuguese Narrative is the first book-length study that analyzes the repeated and peculiar deployment of the father figure in Portuguese narratives from the nineteenth century to the present day. In it, Phillip Rothwell argues for a specifically Portuguese tendency toward what he terms empty paternity - a corruption of the Lacanian paternal function that has surfaced continuously in Portuguese culture from the fifteenth century onward.

A cursory glance at the table of contents of EANN 2009 reveals the am- ing range of neural network and related applications. A random but revealing sample includes: reducing urban concentration, entropy topography in epil- tic electroencephalography, phytoplanktonic species recognition, revealing the structure of childhood abdominal pain data, robot control, discriminating angry and happy facial expressions, ?ood forecasting, and assessing credit worthiness. The diverse nature of applications demonstrates the vitality of neural comp- ing and related soft computing approaches, and their relevance to many key contemporary technological challenges. It also illustrates the value of EANN in bringing together a broad spectrum of delegates from across the world to learn from each other’s related methods. Variations and extensions of many methods are well represented in the proceedings, ranging from support vector machines, fuzzy reasoning, and Bayesian methods to snap-drift and spiking neurons. This year EANN accepted approximately 40% of submitted papers for fu- length presentation at the conference. All members of the Program Committee were asked to participate in the reviewing process. The standard of submissions was high, according to the reviewers, who did an excellent job. The Program and Organizing Committees thank them. Approximately 20% of submitted - pers will be chosen, the best according to the reviews, to be extended and - viewedagainfor inclusionin a specialissueofthe journalNeural Computing and Applications. We hope that these proceedings will help to stimulate further research and development of new applications and modes of neural computing.

The Mediated Mind

How did we arrive at our contemporary consumer media economy? Why are we now fixated on screens, imbibing information that constantly expires, and longing for more direct or authentic kinds of experience? The Mediated Mind answers these questions by revisiting a previous media revolution, the nineteenth-century explosion of mass print. Like our own smartphone screens, printed paper and imprinted objects touched the most intimate regions of nineteenth-century life. The rise of this printed ephemera, and its new information economy, generated modern consumer experiences such as voracious collecting and curating, fantasies of disembodied mental travel, and information addiction. Susan Zieger demonstrates how the nineteenth century established affective, psychological, social, and cultural habits of media consumption that we still experience, even as pixels supersede paper. Revealing the history of our own moment, The Mediated Mind challenges the commonplace assumption that our own new media lack a past, or that our own experiences are unprecedented.

“I’ve gotten most of what I need to finance the trip,” Jim said eagerly. “I just need your share to help cover the cost of supplies and travel. “I put in 5,000 myself. If you give me 5,000 more it will be enough to get everything I need. See, I’ve got it all planned out.” Jim eagerly handed over a list of the supplies he would need for the trip and their costs. Mr. Broderick had to admit that it was a pretty thorough list. Kendall waited for his turn to see the list. He knew his dad would show it to him and Jamie. After all, he had asked them to join him in this meeting. Kendall felt proud of that. Their father believed enough in their sleuthing abilities to ask their help in something he wasn’t sure of. And you couldn’t ever be sure of anything where Jim Michaels was concerned. Jim was their father’s cousin. He was a great guy, but he liked to get involved in some strange adventures. This was no exception. Jim had dropped by and told them about a letter he had bought. The letter was written by an old prospector who was looking for gold in Alaska. He had found it, but hadn’t been able to bring the gold out. Find out if the letter is real or a fake. See if you can solve this 15-minute mystery before the Brodericks do. Similar to the old Encyclopedia Brown mysteries, these short mysteries give kids all the clues they need to solve the mystery, before revealing the answer on the last page, helping kids learn common sense and attention to detail. Ages 8 and up. LearningIsland.com believes in the value of children practicing reading for 15 minutes every day. From the Man Booker–short-listed author of The Northern Clemency, a family and a nation—Bangladesh—are forged through storytelling, conversation, jokes, feuds, blood, songs, bravery, and sacrifice In late 1970 a boy named Saadi is born into a large, defiantly Bengali family in eastern Pakistan. Months later the country splits in two, in what will become one of the most ferocious twentieth-century civil wars. Saadi tells the story of his childhood and of the ingenious ways his family survived the violence and conflicts: from his aunts stuffing him endlessly with sweets to stop marauding soldiers from hearing him cry, to street games based on American television shows; from the basement compartment his grandfather built to hide his treasured books, pictures, and music until after the war, to the daily gossip about each and every one of the relatives, servants, and neighbors. Scenes from Early Life is a beautifully detailed novel of profound empathy—an attempt to capture the collective memory of a family and a country. At once heartbreaking and surprisingly funny, Scenes from Early Life is based on the life of Philip Hensher's husband, and as such it is at once a memoir, a novel, and a history. As this remarkable writer brings the past to life, we come to feel, vividly and viscerally, that Saadi's family—and its struggles and triumphs—are our own. Scenes form Early Life is the winner of the 2013 Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize for a distinguished work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry, evoking the spirit of a place.

We are surrounded by stationery: half-chewed Cristal Bics and bent paper clips, rubber bands to fiddle with or ping, blunt pencils, rubbers and Tipp-ex are integral parts of our everyday environment. So much so that we never think about where they come from, why they are the way they are - or what stories they might have to tell. But luckily, James Ward does and he's here to tell you all about the secret pull stationery exerts on our lives. After all, who remains unmoved by the sight of a pristine blu-tak slab, or the first unmarked sheet of a brand new notepad? And which of humanity's brightest ideas didn't start life on a scrap of paper, a Post-it, or in the margins of a notebook? Exploring the stories behind these everyday objects, Ward reveals tales of invention - accidental and brilliant - and bitter rivalry. He also asks the questions you never thought you had: Who is Mr Pritt? What does shatter-proof resistant mean? How many pens does Argos use? And what does design evolutions in desk organisers mean for society? This witty and entertaining book, packed with fascinating facts, will change the way you look at your desk, pencil case or stationery cupboard forever.

Ebony, Ebony. Are you ok? I heard you scream. Ebony slowly begins to stir. Her mother stands over her with a concerned look on her face. Ebony sits up and rubs the lengthy scar on her right forearm. What a dream. I havent dreamt of how I got this scar in years. Ebony groggily looks at her mother. Did I scream out loud? She embarrassingly inquires in that husky morning voice people have when just waking up. Mildred starts toward her daughters closet. No dear, you didnt. Now please, pull yourself together. We do have a funeral to attend. Ebonys mother searches through her closet. She keeps a firm grip on her emotions during times like this but she couldnt help a tear streaming down her face as she pulls her daughters black satin dress out of the closet. Mildred wipes the tear off her cheek before turning to face her daughter. Here, you can wear this. Ill just put it over on the chair. She retrieves Ebonys black two inch heel shoes from under the bed. They are the appropriate kind. She places the shoes in front of the chair. I know this is a trying time for you. Mildred says as she sits at the foot of the bed. I just want you to know that your father and I are here for you; no matter what. Ebony begins to tear. Mildred moves closer to her daughter and comforts her. Its ok, baby. Go ahead, let it out. She says as Ebony sobs even harder. I wish I could take all your pain away. Just then, a small black bird perches outside of the window. With no sunshine in sight, its shadow slowly creeps into the cozy little room.

When Charles Clarke settled in Elora, Ontario, in 1848 he joined the ranks of the province's radical reformers, becoming a vigorous critic of everything in Canada that smacked of the old regime - rank, privilege, and monopoly - and an enthusiastic supporter of everything promised by the new - equity, democracy, and individual opportunity. He played a prominent role in drafting the 'Clear Grit' platform of 1851, supporting such ideas as a householder's suffrage, the secret ballot, and representation by population. He later espoused the two great causes of nineteenth-century Anglo-Canadian liberalism - provincial rights in Canada and Irish Home Rule in Britain. Equally involved in local affairs - from the Sons of Temperance to the Natural History Society - Clarke tirelessly promoted the natural beauties of Elora and tried to protect the environment of the Grand River gorge from the ravages of industry and human carelessness. Using Clarke's journalistic writings, his private diary, and a memoir he wrote later in life, Kenneth Dewar paints a vivid picture of Clarke's evolving sense of himself and his world in an age of profound transformation.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, the man and thinker, will be fully revealed for the first time in this new edition of his journals and notebooks. The old image of the ideal nineteenth-century gentleman, created by editorial omissions of his spontaneous thoughts, is replaced by the picture of Emerson as he really was. His frank and often bitter criticisms of men and society, his "nihilizing," his anguish at the death of his first wife, his bleak struggles with depression and loneliness, his sardonic views of woman, his earthy humor, his ideas of the Negro, of religion, of God--these and other expressions of his private thought and feeling, formerly deleted or subdued, are here restored. Restored also is the full evidence needed for studies of his habits of composition, the development of his style, and the sources of his ideas. The second volume prints the exact texts of nine journals and three notebooks. It reveals the shape of some of Emerson's enduring interests, in embryo "essays" on the moral sense, moral beauty, taste, greatness and fame, friendship, compensation, and the unity of God and the universe. Restored from oblivion are suppressed passages on the Negro and revelations of acute melancholy and rebelliousness. These records of his developing thought are also the history of his early obscurity, when the fame he sought was still painfully remote.
