For typographers, revival type forms an integral part of their font repertoire (whether they realize it or not). Older classics such as Baskerville, Garamond, and Bodoni are ubiquitous as imbedded fonts in standard operating system collections. They continue to serve their users well, being the trusted go-to tools of professional designers. Yet all revivals are interpretations of lost originals, or, in the rare instances where some original material survives, have been translated into digital fonts that can be used on today's computers. In almost every case, there is, and has to be, considerable selection, revising, and re-formatting involved. The nature of such work is little understood or appreciated. Indeed, the definition, application, and use of type revivals has been neglected in literature, or worse, this has been almost totally misunderstood. Jerry Kelly's Type Revivals sheds new light on the subject, reviewing hundreds of important modern versions of earlier typefaces, and presenting clear and concise discussions of their origins, permutations, and contemporary digital availability. No one in a position to select a typeface, or use type in a book work, should be without it.

Revival Type is a collection of contemporary digital fonts with origins in the past. Examples include direct revivals of metal and wood typefaces, while others are looser interpretations of older typefaces. Among the fonts are interpretations of classic designs by Nicolas Jenson, Claude Garamont, Robert Granjon, William Caslon, John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni, Firmin Didot and other iconic names. Alongside them are typefaces rooted in the work of important, though lesser known, names such as Eudald Pradell, Philippe Grandjean and Richard Austin. Finally, there are updates and revisions of 20th-century classics like Palatino, Meridien, DIN, Metro and Neue Haas Grotesk (the original name of Helvetica). Some designs are not revivals of typefaces but of letterforms, from inscriptions to calligraphic manuals to letters in posters and bookjackets. Some revivals are aesthetic extensions of 20th-century typefaces that have been updated technologically. Others are actually reinterpretations or variations on typefaces from the past necessitated by having to make types that function in the 21st century and not in the distant past. Re:Type looks at type 'revivals' in this broad manner.

The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe provide unique examples of large-scale relatively highly developed centrally planned economies. In the 1980s economists in both the East and West began to focus with increasingly critical attention on the economies of the Soviet Bloc, in an attempt to explain why they were performing so poorly in comparison with the economies of the Western powers and the capitalist countries of South-East Asia. First published in 1988 this substantial and innovative contribution to the critical literature on the economies of the former Soviet bloc is unusual in that its author is equally familiar with both Western and Eastern sources. It highlights, in particular, a discrepancy between the behaviour of individuals in Soviet-style economies and that expected of agents in a market system. It proceeds to outline how the consequent discordance between microeconomic practice and macroeconomic planning generates fundamental economic distortions.

"In the mid-1980s - with the widespread adoption of the personal computer and small laser printers, with the introduction of cheap software packages for making pages and typefaces - a revolution in typography was set in train. Among several unforeseen consequences was an overthrow of the old way of making typefaces: the initiative passed from the old industrially-based companies to small, often one- or two-person outfits. Now we are far enough into this new era to begin to make an assessment." "The first part of this book is a personal statement. Fred Smeijers considers the gains and also the illusions and pitfalls of technical advance. Bringing a deep historical awareness to bear on the topic, he puts this brief recent phase into perspective. Along the way are sharp remarks on the place of the designer in the social world, on the question of copying and copyright. This realistic view brings high-flown pretensions down to earth, yet puts forward a more solid and enduring vision. Smeijers ends this modest manifesto with a new code of conduct for designers." "The second part of the book presents Smeijers's own work as a type designer and graphic designer, over twenty years. It shows all his types and fonts, including several that have until now been hidden from public view, and includes the designer's own narrative of his work so far." "The book has been made in connection with the award to Fred Smeijers of the Gorrit Noordzij Prize, in recognition of his contribution as a designer, teacher, and writer."--Jacket.
